One of the biggest influences on my writing golf-orientated humorous short stories, was the television show I watched off-and-on, during the five decades it ran, staring in 1948, before I was born, and ending in 2004. That’s what you call a long run!
Hosted by humorist Allen Funt, and even funnier guests, like Woody Allen, playing pranks of all kinds on the general public, made me laugh hysterically. There were plenty of golf skits, too, you may want to archive via Google.
Today, there are funny shows, like the “Impractical Jokers”, in which three guys try to outdo each other in playing tricks on men and women. This show can be really funny at times, especially when based on good old-fashioned clever humor – like seeing which joker can stick the most balloons tethered to long strings on the bodies of grocery store shoppers. Other times, the trio of jokers go a little too wild, leaving me thinking to myself how lucky each was for not getting slugged by an angry or frightened person, due to an over-the-top joke played.
There’s also the “Carbonaro Effect” television show that is a little too hard to explain, yet it’s really funny, and, from what I’ve seen, done all in good fun, and less extreme, because of a hands-off policy when it comes to the people being goofed on.
Why I bring these shows and anecdotes up, is to set the scene for telling you about a product, the ProPilot Golf Ball, invented by the car company – Nissan – that can be used to play a practical joke on the golfing friends in your regular weekend foursome.
This specially-engineered golf ball operates a lot like Nissan’s voice-controlled ProPilot 2.0 technology for drivers of the company’s new line of Skyline automobiles, in this sense:
Depending on what directive you give, this clever golf ball uses sophisticated GPS type technology to reach a golf hole on a green, just like the car drives you, literally, to a residential or commercial address.
I’m no scientist, but, apparently, all you have to do when standing over a putt, is tell (even whisper) the golf ball to go into the hole on the green, and camera ingenuity, together with repeated download applications, will roll the ball over a flat or undulated green, fast or slow green surface, curve left or right, roll up and down the most subtle or steepest slope, and find the hole!
Better to utilize this golf ball from long distance when employing your prank on a green, say in the 25 feet and over range, since it’s easier to disguise you voice-directive and more shocking to the golfing viewers watching the golf ball roll and roll until, eventually, finding the cup.
Do this a few times during a round, while keeping a straight face – that is, after you employ a few Tiger Woods-style fist pumps and yell out Yes! a couple of times – and you’ll witness your golfing buddies go bonkers.
The real bonus: You don’t have to wait until April Fools’ Day to put (rather, “putt”) the ProPilot Golf Ball into action, and Enjoy Golf in a very different way, just for a day.
