Memories … LPGA Pathfinder

From A Fan of Jan’s, Forever!

The bonus of being senior editor of GOLF Magazine, from 1984-1998, is that I got to meet and work on articles with the world’s best golfers, and not just instructional, although that was my forte, and not just with men on the PGA Tour.

I really enjoyed working with LPGA golfers, particularly Jan Stephenson, the beauty of the women’s tour, back in the 80’s, a golfer really versed on swing and shot-making technique, who proved why she was a two-time major championship winner, when we played together at Isleworth Country Club, where Tiger lived at one time, in Windermere, Florida.

Jan had all the shots, from driving, to irons, to chipping and putting. But, she had something else. Jan epitomized physical fitness, but although strong and flexible, maintained her femininity. This is why Jan was chosen to pose, in Playboy type poses, only in a sexy bathing suit rather than nude, in a magazine we also produced for women: Fairway.

This is also why I was asked to fly from New York to Boca Raton, with our magazine’s photographer, Leonard Kamsler, to meet Jan in a gym, and do a story on her exercise program, with Leonard taking photos while I took notes on what Jan had to say as she went through her routine.
