What I emphasize in Total Shotmaking, and one reason for writing this instruction book with Fred Couples, is Fred’s carefree mental attitude. Even in 1992, the year Fred won the Masters Tournament, he strolled around Augusta National, checking out the Azaleas and other pretty flowers on the grounds, as if this famous championship course had reverted back to its original nursery status.
Because of Fred’s success as a tour professional, it’s sure hard to knock his what-is-to-be-is-to-be mental attitude, and whether this is just a front for what is a hard-as-nails killer-instinct, I believe it is a good attitude for the typical amateur to adopt. The reason is the carefree attitude promotes relaxation of the body and a calming of the spirit. You need to have your mind right to allow your muscles to work to maximum efficiency and employ a swing that looks so slow-moving and effortless that you’d swear you won’t be able to hit the ball out of your shadow. But, like Fred, you will hit the ball powerfully and on-target, and quietly go round the course hitting more fairways and greens over all eighteen holes, thereby giving yourself the best chance to shoot your lowest scores. For this reason alone, I’m very glad Total Shotmaking was written. That said there’s more waiting for you to learn from Fred’s other golfing assets.
